About Us banner 6000

In 1962, The Johnny Lewis Trio played the Seattle World's Fair and after which, from 1963 to 1965, they played at the Tyee Motor Inn in Tumwater, Wa.. Where the Tyee used to sit, there now resides a Fred Meyer shopping center. During this time Johnny began teaching music lessons at the Lacey Music Store on Pacific Avenue, in Lacey. The store was owned by the Torrence Family: Jim, his wife Rose, their three sons and one daughter. Jim had opened up the Lacey Music Center in 1956 in a separate building from their family house which sat behind the store. By 1966, Johnny had an opportunity to purchase the Lacey Music Center from the Torrence family. This is where the history of Music 6000 really starts. The foundation of one of the biggest music stores in Thurston county began in an old church along a busy Lacey street.

What was purchased was the store along Pacific Ave., a vacant church on the corner of the property and the rest of the 9 acres bordering Carpenter Road. In 1969, Johnny met Ruth Brown along with her four children: Steve, Jeff, Tracey, and Dana. By 1970, Ruth and the four kids began working in the store. In 1973, Johnny and Ruth were married and the Lewis family as we know it came into existence. By 1977 the store had to be moved to the old Church at 6000 Pacific Avenue. The name was changed at that time from the Lacey Music Center to Music 6000. From the time of 1978 to 1985, the store grew and as time went by, Johnny and Ruth left more of the daily operations to Jeff and Steve. The brothers built the store up until it was bursting with gear. The first employees were Mark Eckert, high school friend Perri Jenkins, and Dave Broyles, who was actually hired for one day a week. Mark actually became the first non-Lewis full time employee. By 1989/90, the 9 acres that made up the original Music 6000 was sold to Albertsons and the 2921 Lewis family purchased the building at 2921 Pacific Avenue where Music 6000 grew to over a $3 million operation. In 2006, Music 6000 was moved to it's present location at 3738 Pacific Avenue, doubling it's previous floor space.
